Luckily one source for gardening <del>toys<\/del> tools, Gardeners Supply, has their main offices here and an outlet store as well. Many times I have looked at the catalog for things then run over to the outlet store for deeply reduced prices on product. One item I picked up for a song was this large self watering planter, sans self water kit, for a steal. Being somewhat resourceful, :), I knew I could remedy the situation..<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 441px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Empty Planter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5108\/5842014343_ca73fa1776_m.jpg?resize=431%2C307\" alt=\"Self Watering planter\" width=\"431\" height=\"307\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Empty Planter<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I needed a support system to create a separate space for a water reservoir that would easily fit the width of the pot. Looking around the house I saw that the plant carriers from our local greenhouses would be perfect and something I had plenty of.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 286px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" title=\"Assembling the parts for the inside planter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3623\/5842013953_6817489ac9_m.jpg?resize=276%2C388\" alt=\"Self Watering planter\" width=\"276\" height=\"388\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Assembling the parts for the inside planter<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The plant carrier wasn&#8217;t long enough to span the entire length of the planter, I would need two carriers to get the job done and add strength to the support. One end of the carrier was cut off to make them fit snuggly together.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 388px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" title=\"Cut one end off so they fit together well. \" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5028\/5842013427_ef44f2487e_m.jpg?resize=378%2C270\" alt=\"Self Watering planter\" width=\"378\" height=\"270\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cut one end off so they fit together well.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Once you have the end of the plant carrier modified you can place on carrier over the other so that the carrier can span the planter. Luckily the edges of the plant carrier holds the system at a good height and there are supports in the middle of the planter to hold up the system. If I hadn&#8217;t had this support system to hold up the carriers I would have used a few upturned smaller plant pots to hold up the system.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" title=\"One fits right over the other one now!\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3285\/5842560174_18b28e19ea_m.jpg?resize=390%2C278\" alt=\"Self Watering planter\" width=\"390\" height=\"278\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">One fits right over the other one now!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 390px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" title=\"Tight fit, like a bug in a rug!\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5078\/5842012761_6be9003b16_m.jpg?resize=380%2C271\" alt=\"Self Watering planter\" width=\"380\" height=\"271\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tight fit, like a bug in a rug!<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">My next concern was keeping soil from filling the water reservoir but allowing roots to get through. Wet newspaper would be the perfect answer to this dilemma.\u00a0 A few layers of wet newsprint was all I needed to contain the soil above the reservoir.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 389px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" title=\"Laying down wet newspaper\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3338\/5842559356_bc266feae2_m.jpg?resize=379%2C270\" alt=\"Self Watering planter\" width=\"379\" height=\"270\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Laying down wet newspaper<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Once the paper is in place you need a way to get water into the reservoir, I used a simple plastic hose approximately the size of a water hose, which I found at a hardware store.
