The sweet smells of home-cooking welcoming you home. As the food based holidays come near, I’ve embraced the role of grandmother. I’m gladly creating aromatic memories for my family, lasting long after the warmth of hugs have passed.

Our holiday meals are all home-cooked, feast days aren’t filled with calorie counting worries on this day. We’re a family that loves cooking and the big holidays mean pies, cakes, cookies, and other delectable treats. My mother loves baking pies for the holidays, we’ve often joked about the one pie per person ratio at her holiday meals. Each family member has their own specialty, during the holidays we remember family we’ve lost and what they would often bring.

You might think this would be a cooking photo. Instead, I’ll share this image from chemgapedia of aromatic compounds.

I’m hosting this year, we won’t have that number of pies, there will be enough leftovers to send home with guests.

When hosting any holiday there is more than cooking to be done. In the days leading up to the event the house is cleaned, tables set, serving dishes washed in advance, menus planned, and fighting crowds at the grocery.

I’ve hosted many large meals, I’m always nervous that the potatoes will be cold or the turkey dry. This year I’m planning to cook the turkey flat to cut cooking time. I’ll prepare many things early in the day, warmed in the oven so everything is warm at once. We’ve ordered a small toy set to entertain the young one. There isn’t a kids table as we only have one youngster and the baby will dine on mother’s milk.

With all the work and worry, I’m still excited to fill the shoes of the beloved family members before me. To have our home filled with love and laughter as we create happy memories.

[bctt tweet=”We hacked the grocery store this year by shopping after 8 O’Clock pm, arriving to an empty parking lot.”]

Are you hosting or attending your holiday meal this year?
