A Walk through the Winooski River Nature Trail
We have lived, it seems, almost all our lives in this one place, yet there are places we have yet to explore in the Valley Park Area. (Valley Park Site has very basic information) The Winooski Nature Trail was one of the walks on our list to visit, sharing the excitement of a new trail with family makes it a great day. The Winooski River starts in Cabot, Vermont then travels 90 miles to Lake Champlain, with parks all along the way, each stop has its own story to tell about the river’s journey.
The day starts with the coolness of a sunny spring morning, ideal temperatures for lowland walks. Recently flooding closing the area for many weeks but are now open. Trails now appear freshly swept of debris in places with the tell-tale “sweepings” piled up against fallen trees or various barriers along the waters recent travels. Luckily enough time had passed which dried out the trails leaving very few mud pits, bridges are available for anything naturally wet.
The walk meanders along a this section of the river allowing for some very relaxing sounds of water and some pastoral views as well. Soon you start to hear sounds of traffic joining in the fray and with a few quick turns you come upon a small sandy outcropping and the supports to the highway bridge. In the distance I could see the flashes of color and was excited to see what we might find.
The nature walk was an easy one that can easy be done in under an hour, you might have to walk over some well placed logs or boards but otherwise easy trail.
Hi Janet;
This sounds absolutely wonderful! It’s amazing how many of us have great places to visit right in our own backyard, but fail to stop long enough to visit them. I have a feeling with the economy the way it is these days more people may look to home for great vacation travel times.

I have heard of this happening in larger areas, so many of our New York city friends haven’t seen the touring sites. They never realize it until they are soon to move away then rush to get it all in. For us, having house guests often, we like to be familiar with the closest quick “off the beaten path” things to do and enjoy our local parks.
