A weekend at Mother’s, taking a project break
We have a busy weekend planned and spent the first part finishing a window project my mother had started. The varnish had aged and was lifting in places so it was sanded clean this spring, we waited until we had a dry warm day to refinish them. There are four large paned windows with double hungs on each side. First the curtains came down to be washed and hung outside to air dry. The entire frame was washed the window glass was next, before bed I wanted to put down two coats of finish. After the clean up and prep work was done I put down the first coat then had to wait for it to dry so we decided to walk the dog.
They are logging in the woods around my mother’s home, the same woods I played in as a child. We walked up the road to the access road and turned in, it was decided to keep the dog on leash for the whole walk. At one time the area was a marsh but the cedar trees grew in and put all that ground water to good use the marsh dried out. As a child the trees were about 15 ft tall and so dense that you could not walk through them. I would follow the trails the small animals made during their daily treks when one day I came upon the stone steps. The area is loaded with glacial rocks and this one rock had been cut so that someone could use the slab of stone to support a bridge or structure. For some reason this one stone was abandoned and sits to this day just out of site in the forest behind her home. It is now open but as a child this was surrounded by dense cedars and it was a destination when playing in the woods, that is until you get creeped out.
Later on in the afternoon we went on an intense little hike dodging downed trees over very uneven terrain.
