HazeCam is great for checking out the region.
All around the northeast are webcams that allow you soak up the views around town. At our old house, we don’t have a great view of the western horizon. Whenever we see a colorful sunset, Hazecam is the place to go for a chance viewing. Often, when traveling, I will search for local views via webcams to see what the area looks like and where the local attractions are. We’re just geeky enough to stand in front of a live webcam, then text a friend or view the live cam to take a screenshot.
Bad weather pending: you can view weather happening around the east coast from the HazeCam network. For each location, the site provides a map with various points of interest highlighted on the provided image.
Hazecam.net isn’t about sharing views, according to their site their purpose is:
“The purpose of CAMNET is to raise public awareness about the effects of air pollution on visibility. This is accomplished, in part, through a network of realtime visibility cameras located at scenic urban and rural locations. CAMNET pictures are updated every 15 minutes. In addition, near-realtime air pollution and meteorological data are provided to help distinguish natural from man-made causes of poor visibility, and to provide health-relevant data to the public on current air pollution levels. The air pollution and meteorological data are updated every hour.”
