When I first started this blog, I was predominately a “clean eater,” like, you know... Tosca Reno style. Then I did a trial eating protocol that included not eating: wheat, gluten, or grains. It wasn't a huge change as I wasn't a huge bread eater anyhow, besides, I thought at the time, it would be temporary right.. just a trial..

It wasn’t like I was having noticeable issues regarding my digestion, if I did they weren't terrible, however, now that I’ve mostly eliminated grains from my diet, I certainly notice a lot of changes for the better.

Now I am in transition, trying to describe how I align my current eating style. I’ve spent the last few weeks going through various plans, checking off the do’s and don’ts to see where I fit in.

I’m not sure why labeling an eating style matters to me, perhaps due to the groups I converse with, groups who spend a lot of energy tearing apart plans to discover how they come together from a planning to implementing. Still, at the end of the day, no matter what the name of my style, organic locally grown foods are eaten as much as possible and meats are locally grown field raised too.

I was a clean eater but first....

What is Clean Eating exactly?

It is more of a lifestyle than a diet, you'd be eating close to the earth or foods closer to its natural state, consuming little that is processed or nothing with an ingredient list full of chemicals.

So if not a Clean Eater, what other options are there and why the change?

The process started because I wanted to take advantage of nutrient timing: or utilizing our body’s hormonal cycles to better influence muscle growth and repair, also to manipulate a higher percentage of fat loss. (More on that later, because I know you want to know)

Before I go into deeper detail, as I've mentioned before, I read Good Calories, Bad Calories, the Renegade Diet, Carb Back Loading, and on to Carb Night Solution, which I followed for 90 days before transitioning back to Carb Back Loading. At the moment I still somewhat Carb Back Load, but with a performance styled twist. (Again, more on that later)

If I am no longer eating clean,

What other options are there?

What about the Paleo Diet?

The eating style, endorsed by the Crossfit group, is trending at the moment, but what is it? Loosely, it is an eating style that many believe to mimic how our “caveman” ancestors might have eaten “back in the day.”

Paleo Dieters eat: Lean proteins, fruits and vegetables, healthy fats from: nuts, seeds, avocados, olive oil, fish oil and grass fed meats.

Paleo dieters don’t eat: grains or dairy (milk, cheeses, and yogurt), processed foods, sugars, legumes, starches, and alcohol.

I’ve been reading a nicely written post (with adorable graphics) by Nerd Fitness, “The Beginner’s Guide to the Paleo Diet,” which does an excellent job at breaking down the specifics if you want to read more about Paleo Eating.

How does this fit into my style? I’m on board regarding the items on the allowed list, however I had reservations about not consuming legumes or dairy as yogurts and cheeses are something our family enjoys often and any eating plan that hates on peanut butter won’t fit in at our house. There isn’t a specific macro breakdown for the eating plan and it varies depending on what you are trying to accomplish: i.e., muscle growth, fat loss, or general well-being.

Okay, so I’m not exactly Paleo… now what?

Mediterranean Diet?

This is a an eating plan around traditional nutritional patterns of southern Italy, Greece, and Spain known for good heart health and longevity, which created an interest in their eating style.

Mediterranean dieters eat:

Fruits and vegetables, beans and nuts, healthy grains, fish, olive oil, small amounts of dairy, and red wine.

Mediterranean dieters eliminate:

Processed foods, limited amounts of red meat (only twice a month), and only two meals a weeks of fish or poultry.

How does this fit into my plan:

A diet of 50% carbs, which is on the higher end, would fuel my workouts but as an active fitness person I feel I need more protein than this plan has to offer. If I manipulated the macros it might work for me, otherwise the ideals of the plan look great. I’m not much of a wine drinker or a fruit eater, so this type of eating doesn’t seem to suit me at all.

Could it be, Gluten Free?

Could I simply be a gluten free clean eater, that would make planning a lot easier, but what is a Gluten Free Diet? Simply stated, it is an eating plan that removes products that contain gluten from wheat, barley, rye and other grains.

Gluten Free Dieters eat: meats, seafood, legumes, eggs, dairy, fruits and vegetables. Grain substitutions are: amaranth, arrowroot, buckwheat, corn/cornmeal, flax, quinoa, rice and many other gluten-free flours from things like coconut, rice, almonds.

What Do You Eliminate?

Foods containing gluten. This includes malt, barley, bulgar, semolina, spelt, rye and wheat.

How does this fit into my style: Other than the obvious modifications in cooking, this is an easy change to my eating style as I am not a big bread eater. To do this successfully I would need to modify the majority of my recipes as I go along. Nutrient timing would still be a viable option with this plan as well, of course it wouldn't include GMO substitutes.

What about Atkins?

I’ve never considered the Atkins Diet, it sounds like a lot of work to figure out the phases. It is a low carb styled eating plan that focuses on proteins, fats, and fibers. Perhaps I should get over my preconceived notions and take a look..

Atkins Allows:

This changes slightly with each phase but: meat, seafood, dairy, eggs, vegetables and fats/oils at first; legumes, fruits, nuts, and some grains as the phases progress.

What you eliminate?

Phase one: no fruits or grains

Phase two: add in fruits and juices along with nuts and seeds.

Phase three: Starchy vegetables

Phase four: legumes and grains.

Does this fit my plan? With Macros like: Protein: 65% Fats: 35% and Carbs only 5%, I’d be in a constant mental fog going that low carb. Based on my TDEE of 2280 (more on that later), 5% would equate to less than 30 grams of carbohydrates daily and certainly be ketogenic. I've just completed 90 days of ULC, during that time I was less that 30g of carbs a day, I barely knew my name and often lost track of what I was doing in the moment. While you could run the program short-term, It wouldn’t work as a long-term eating plan.

Then there is South Beach?

The South Beach Diet offers three phases of the eating plan, which is like Atkins somewhat in that the plan has phases, the first phase is rather regimented, then things relax as the next two phases cycle into place.

What Do You Eat?

Phase One: meat, vegetables, legumes, dairy, nuts and seeds.

Phase Two: Whole grains, fruits, starchy vegetables are added back in.

Phase Three: Includes the above, with the addition of more grains and sweets.

What Do You Eliminate?

Early on you aren’t eating grains, starchy vegetables or sweets, but they are added back in over time.

How does this fit into my plan?

It really isn’t an eating style at all, more like a short-term diet plan without any nutrient timing or long-term plan for health. I'm not fully aware of how it comes together, but it doesn't sound like it would be effective once the starches and sweets are added back in toward the end of the plan.

Finally, the Zone?

It seems The Zone Diet is a 40/30/30 (C/P/F,) plan balances the consumption of protein and carbohydrates in specific ratios in an effort to reduce cellular inflammation. Dr. Sears believes you can't store fat and burn fat at the same time, his diet aligns your eating to keep the fat burning higher. A google search seems to pull up a lot of Cross Fit sites quoting the Zone as this particular group embraces this particular plan. In fact, I believe that the Cross Fit environment teaches the Zone Diet to their followers.

What Do You Eat?

The Zone Diet isn’t about eating either “low-carb” or “high-protein,” instead by balancing protein, carbohydrates and fats, it is believed you can control the major hormones– insulin, glucagon and eicosanoids using the human diet.

Allowed foods:

• Lean Natural Protein

• Low GI Carbs

• Fat

What Do You Eliminate?

No grains, breads, pasta, rice, and other similar starches

How does this fit into my plan?

This plan is fairly close to how I currently eat, one that I feel I should investigate further to determine how this could fit into my plan. Perhaps the combination of Paleo and this plan might be the best answer for me, I need further research before embarking on that eating plan.

I guess at the current time I am eating:

Dirty Paleo!!

How did I come to the title of "Dirty Paleo? It was the fact that I am really loosely following the paleo diet now, with the exception of occasionally eating legumes, dairy, and some starchy vegetables. I identify with Paleo eating style over South Beach, the Zone, or Atkins and I'm not eating in phases. Another interesting point, which I got from a performance nutrition site, is that I only follow Paleo 80% of the time, the remaining 20% of the time I am foot loose and fancy free, eating intuitively.

Researching this blog post has really opened up my eyes to the variations to these eating styles, it made me think hard about how my current style could fit into each one of them. Being physically active and a weight trainer requires more attention to my nutrition than most people would think is normal, which is why I spent the time researching this project.

While I am eating "Dirty Paleo" at the moment, it is with variation of Carb Back Loading (a nutrient timing plan) and a plan that really focuses on increasing your calorie intake to be closer to what your daily energy needs are. In my next post I will go over how I determine my daily expenditure and what happened when I suddenly went from my average of 1500 calories a day to well over 2000.

What about you, my readers, where do you fit in?

I'd love to hear which plan you feel you are eating under or are more of an intuitive eater and whatever happens happens...

I have to apologize for the lack of an April Twelve of Twelve post, my life has been a whirlwind of: gardening, fitness, a few small trips and lots of outdoor time without camera or phone.
I have to apologize for the lack of an April Twelve of Twelve post, my life has been a whirlwind of: gardening, fitness, a few small trips and lots of outdoor time without camera or phone. (Akkk, seriously, hours without electronics in hand, shudder!! The horror..)

So, I’ll try to make it up by getting this month’s photos up early! The gardens are absolutely stunning this year and there will be a few photos from over a few days as well, I want to share some of the show with you.. (I’ll have more by the end of the day today)

After a busy day working in the gardens we settled in to prepare our evening meal. My husband, who loves dropping what he believes are subliminal hints, mentions a ricotta cream I made last year. That particular dish, Unfortunately, was made with grilled pineapple, which we were currently out of. All was not lost however as we had a healthy supply of mango. With a little experimentation I managed to pull a rabbit out of my hat, and put together a delectable dessert..

I feel at a loss right now, I’ve had so much time away from this blog without connection it is like meeting up with an old friend and not knowing where to start when they ask, “How’s it going?”

To make the whole process a wee bit easier for me, here is a short list of what I have done:

Spent a year studying, then completing my Personal Trainer certification. (I passed, happy dance for me)

Utilized free college courses, which assisted my PT Cert studies, with focus on nutrition.

While Studying nutrition I completely changed my thinking on what, how, and when I eat and not in the way you might imagine.

Went deep into boards that focused on fitness and nutrition to immerse myself in the environment and assist my learning.

I decided on Ace Fitness for my Personal Trainer certification, using the full package and time allotment I studied for the better part of a year to really nail down all that I felt I should know to pass the test and work with clients.

--> Now that I am a CPT, or certified personal trainer, I need to actually find and work with clients. <--

(Hint: This could be you!!)

Regarding the free college courses: I was introduced to Coursera.org by a relative of mine who, I am sure, thought I was crazy for the nutrition experiment I started right after the first of the year, and believed I needed an intervention. Coursera doesn’t give actual college credits, but it does allow you access to college level studies which can assist in your relative knowledge base and understanding of certain topics. From there I was made aware of Open2study.com, which is the same concept as Coursera.org but so far the layout and coursework is much more eye appealing.

Regarding my nutrition studies, personal training studies, and changing my thinking on nutrition. Soon you will see a revised edition of the micronutrient posts I have done in the past. The ironic part about the entire story is that my CPT and Coursera studies did not run parallel to what I was learning through Taubes or the other eating tools I was starting to utilize. Studying both together might have been an issue for some, luckily I was able to separate the two belief systems enough to test successfully in the SAD (Standard American Diet) while eating more of a Paleo diet; I will write more about that later.

I took and passed my Certified Personal Trainer test in late March, immediately after we left for a nice family vacation and now we are home, spring garden clean up is done, almost all of my pressing course work is over, and now I have time to get back to reading, sharing, and blogging...

I have so much to share with you that I just don't know where to start.... So I will just jump right in...

I’ve also often wondered why a group of people, who seemingly ate the same, would have some who gained bodyfat and others who remained thin; this question has often baffled me and many others I know. This has been in the back of my mind during course of my reading and posting of various nutritional updates and/or documentaries.
That is why the last series of documentaries I’ve seen opened up my eyes to something entirely new, something I had been close-minded to as I was “old school” nutrition wise and fell into the MyPlate.Gov way of eating. In these documentaries they discuss the fleecing of information. How various groups manipulated data so that the outcome leaned in favor of the industry, or industries, that paid for the study or perhaps a new wing for future studies.

Intrigue caused me to consider a trial into eating more red meat and less grain products, I’ve since changed my eating style. Watching the movie “Fat Heads,” started a complete shift in my thinking and fueled 4 intense months of further reading. These months caused me to put my fitness studies aside, shifting my focus on this new information.

What took me so long to make the change I wondered to myself, as we had a freezer full or organic field raised beef. I had been curious about it over the years, but like many humans; I feared change and worse, heart disease..

My first foray into this change of thinking came from: Fathead The Movie..

The following was pulled directly from their page which details more About the Film
"Have you seen the news stories about the obesity epidemic? Did you see Super Size Me? Then guess what? … You’ve been fed a load of bologna.

Comedian (and former health writer) Tom Naughton replies to the blame-McDonald’s crowd by losing weight on a fat-laden fast-food diet while demonstrating that nearly everything we’ve been told about obesity and healthy eating is wrong. Along with some delicious parody of Super Size Me, Naughton serves up plenty of no-bologna facts that will stun most viewers, such as: The obesity “epidemic” has been wildly exaggerated by the CDC. People the government classifies as “overweight” have longer lifespans than people classified as “normal weight.” Having low cholesterol is unhealthy. Lowfat diets can lead to depression and type II diabetes. Saturated fat doesn’t cause heart disease — but sugars, starches and processed vegetable oils do.”

Watch the trailer on FatHead:

Watching the FatHead documentary started a lot of talk about the past studies and testing procedures, I perused their suggested reading and researched the Sims Test done on Vermont prisoners, which really intrigued me. (A NYTimes article discussing this, and other studies)

I wanted to learn more, so I then watched the series out of Britain called, “Why Thin People are not Fat,” again they mention the Vermont Sims study… The BBC reports have this to say about this controversial series:

“….the science of weight gain is less straightforward than the headlines sometimes suggest. Why, for example, do some people seem to eat what they like and not put on weight, while others limit their diet yet struggle to shed their bulk?
In 1967, a medical researcher, Ethan Sims, carried out an experiment at Vermont state prison in the US. He recruited inmates to eat as much as they could to gain 25% of their body weight, in return for early release from prison.
Some of the volunteers could not reach the target however hard they tried, even though they were eating 10,000 calories a day. Sims's conclusion was that for some, obesity is nearly impossible.
It was with this in mind that 10 slim volunteers - who were not dieters - convened in more hospitable circumstances, for a recent experiment devised by the BBC's Horizon documentary. The 10 spent four weeks gorging on as much pizza, chips, ice cream and chocolate as they could, while doing no exercise, and severely limiting the amount they walked.”

Here is the “Why Thin People are not Fat” series on YouTube..

At this point I was seriously intrigued and set off to read all I could from Taubes, Good Calories, Bad Calories to his paired down version titled, Why We Get Fat. Also reading two organic/holistic focused paleo eating styles: David Asprey’s "Bulletproof Executive" and Jason Ferruggia’s "Renegade Diet". Originally I started with the Renegade Diet but some new information brought me to Kiefer’s “Carb Back Loading," which led to what I am currently doing, which is “Carb Night Solution.”

(This post is only stating what I am currently doing, this is not a suggestion for you to follow my plan nor am I suggesting that you do it yourself. As with anything, read at your own risk and consult with a physician before starting any health, fitness, or nutritional program)

What does all this mean you ask? For starters it means that I have been eating what is called an Ultra Low Carb diet since January 4th. My day consists of protein, fats, and green veggies; which I consume for 5-6 consecutive days with one day of refeeding on starchy carbohydrates to replenish my liver and muscles, keeping my metabolism going.

Why am I doing this? After reading all the information and realizing why the old 40/30/30 system I had been following wasn't working to change my bodyfat percentages the way I wanted. I had "If you keep on doing what you did in the past, don't expect your future results to change," running through my mind, so I took a leap of faith.

Why makes me think this works? I've read about capitalizing on our bodies hormonal responses and how not providing glucose to my system, in the form of carbohydrates, trains my body to turn to bodyfat reserves into an energy source, which then starts a bodyfat burn.
What have I noticed since starting? While my scale weight hasn’t changed dramatically, as I was already fairly lean, I’ve notice my clothes fitting much better and more loose. Caliper readings indicate that I have been losing bodyfat while retaining lean body mass or muscle tissue.

What happens next? After I reach a bodyfat percentage that I like I will continue to eat only clean proteins and fats in the first half of my day, then will consume my carbohydrates after my strength workouts. Carbohydrates after my workouts help to facilitate storage of glycogen in my muscle tissue vs storage in fat tissue.

Why have I not posted or written about this until now? This eating style took time for me to mentally adapt to. Not that I am a starchy carb or sugar eater anyhow, but only consuming fats and red meats all day, every day, took some mental adjustment; then at the end of the week eating things like cakes, cookies, pies, and sweets seemed so wrong. After reading the stories of those that have done it, or currently doing it, I realized this was how the process worked and I had to trust the process and give in.
Will I continue to post regarding this process? Yes, I hope to talk more about what I learned while researching the various protocols and also how this eating style has impacted me. Later in the spring I will have my blood work done to see what my numbers looks like and to see what impact it has had on my testing results.

Please post any thoughts, questions, or concerns here. Or is you know of any further reading that might fit in well with what I've already read, please share. I will do my best to answer and explain what I am doing and how I am feeling.

I've been reading up on the Paleo Diet, for many reasons, which I'll not go into at the moment. However one side effect of paleo eating brought my chronic sinus issues to the forefront, they have been very irritating in the last few months and I needed a break from the constant sneezing, snorkeling and misery, without medications..

I hate medications and hope to not need or have to take them, EVER!

I know my allergy trigger is mold specifically, but my house is clean and dry almost always, plus, it is winter. Winter is a time when I am not outside exposing myself to things like damp leaves or musty hay, my allergy symptoms should be settling down at this time, but they were not, they were getting worse.

The quest began for answers to this burning question: Why were my allergies on fire? And why, when I cut out starchy carbs, did they suddenly clear up?

After reading that low carb could cut sinus symptoms I felt the need to search for things relating to sinusitis, I found Livestrong, a website which I enjoy regardless of the current situation with its founding member. There I read a few short paragraphs stating that while most people don’t manifest carbohydrate sensitivity in their sinuses, the fungi feed off the sugars circulating in your bloodstream, thereby growing with wild abandon. I typically don’t consume large amounts of carbs, other than vegetables, but it was the holiday season, which is full of decadent holiday feasting.. Ah, the light bulb moment, I had been farming my very own personal fungal factory right in my sinuses, sounds rather gross!! (It was too)

Livestrong mentions Oasis Wellness as the source for their information. A quick google and I found Oasis Wellness and an article about natural health remedies for sinusitis. Here I saw their list of symptoms for sinusitis, which I had almost all of them, including embarrassing chronic halitosis (regardless of my oral care) I had been strongly suspecting something going on in my sinus. The list of symptoms, according to the Oasis Wellness site is:

Possible symptoms of sinusitis include: (via: Oasis Wellness)

Stuffy or runny nose

Difficulty breathing through the nose

Sneezing

Coughing

Pain and/or swelling in the sinus areas (nose, eyes, cheeks, forehead)

Jaw pain

Dental pain

Ear pain

Nausea

Fatigue

Bad breath

Difficulty sleeping (especially chronic)

Oasis Wellness suggests checking for inflammation in the coolest way ever, scary flashlight face!! Well not quite, but almost and who wouldn’t want to, this is how they suggest doing it:

“If you have a bad cold and are not sure if it has changed into sinusitis, there are a couple of simple tests you can perform. Mucous (from bacterial or viral infections) will often fill up sinus cavities if sinusitis is present. Tapping on the sinus cavities can help tell if they are backed up or not. Also, try shining a flashlight on the facial skin outside sinus cavities. Light will be visible inside the mouth if they are not clogged. Your health care provider can perform these tests, or a friend or family member who is knowledgeable about sinus cavity locations.”

The Oasis Wellness site has a lot of information that is worth a read, I suggest you take a look if you are suffering from chronic sinusitis. I reviewed their suggestions for natural treatment of sinusitis, marked off in red what I am already doing or want to try:

Hydration. (No worries, I have an addiction to H2O)

Moist Air (Always at home, however my boss keeps the office at 19% humidity and suffers from asthma, we call him Dr. Dumass, no lie)

Warm Compresses. (Not currently needed)

Environmental Pollutants. (Like a rock star baby)

Liver Support. (My liver is doing great, I do nothing to tax it)

Yeast/Candida. Be watchful for symptoms of yeast overgrowth and other factors such as antibiotic use (I haven’t been on antibiotics for over 25 years)

Wild Mediterranean Oregano Oil is highly beneficial in controlling yeast overgrowth as well as helping with allergies and sinus inflammation. The one my family uses and finds effective and the one I recommend to clients is Oregasil™. (I will try eliminating sugar, flour, dairy before adding any additional “things” to my day)

Healthy Diet. Eliminate sugar, white flour, dairy, hydrogenated oils and pre-packaged foods. (I don’t do pre-packaged foods or hydrogenated oils; eliminating sugar, flour, dairy should be<del> a piece of cake.</del>.. errr easy)

Salt-Air Respiratory Inhaler. (Can do this as well)

Steam. Inhaling steam with a few drops of eucalyptus essential oil (simple enough, worth trying)

Don’t Skip on Sleep. (I sleep like the dead on most nights)

Immune Enhancement (not ready for this yet)

So began my journey, as of January 4 of this year and I combined it with a little experiment that relates to becoming fat adapted and burning bodyfat for energy during the day .

So far what have my results have been:

My sinuses have been clear on days with no starchy carbs.

I am fitting into clothes that I haven’t worn since my little gene experiment last year.

My body measurements are going down, which explains how I can fit into my smaller sizes.

I’ve been pouchy these last few months, but not anymore! Now my lower abs have flattened out.

I get to eat bacon more often and have one day a week where I eat cake too.. (but wake a little congesty)

My strength training is going very well and my training volume has increased, who knew!!

I deem this a success thus far and plan to continue this journey to see where it takes me. More information will follow, I am using myself as a guinea pig of sorts, even though I know sharing is caring…

It was time to renew one of my favorite magazines, this renewal had so much more to offer than just 6 issues: Print copies, Digital Editions, Online Access, Courses and a free book.. NICE SCORE

I was doing a weekly snippet, this was when I had time to read articles, these days I am reading manuals and these aren't snippet worthy.. However, I've been off work for a few days and have had time to do some fun reading.. With that in mind, I wanted to take a good look at eggs, since a relative of mine from the past was an egg farmer and we raised our own as well. Lately, I've been following the process of my relative's great-granddaughter, who started her own small chicken farm, with a smoking hot chicken house, I might add.

This is the soil section, which I am leading with today, as I really like this piece a lot.

I want to share a great blog post I found on the "organic" eggs you might find in the markets, like anything else, mass egg farmers are grabbing hot topic words and using them to push sales. This blog gives some great detail about eggs and the labels you will see in the markets today, they cite Mother Earth News and their 2007 study of egg production, overall this is a great piece. I am sharing this with you as it is written so well that without hours of research, I couldn't do it as well as it is done here.

Here is a little snippet from The Small Footprint Family and their article titled: "Are Organic Eggs a Scam"

"Why Does A Pasture-Raised Egg Matter So Much?

Truly pasture-raised hens live like this!

If you’ve never eaten an egg from a hen raised on sunshine, bugs and grass, then you are in for quite a treat. Deep orange, gooey yolks stand up tall within their thick, milky whites unlike any store-bought egg you’ve ever seen.

Their color, flavor and texture are made distinctive by high amounts of Vitamin A, D, E, B-12, folate, riboflavin, zinc, calcium, beta carotene, choline, and tons of omega 3 fatty acids, including DHA, EPA, ALA, and AA. A pasture-raised egg is a true superfood.

I also like the link they share from The Cornucopia Institute ranking organic eggs, check it out to see if you find your local vendor and how they rank"

Now something about the body..

Last year I let go of my reserve to eat with wild abandon for a set period of time, during the entire holiday season from Thanksgiving to the end of the first of the year. The end result was that I put on bodyfat, then throughout 2012 I reverted back to my old "tried and true" eating patterns to get back into shape, yet had a residual of the 2011 binge still hanging around. I didn't like to see this little bulge and set out to step up my game and burn it off.

How did I plan to do it... I researched the best fitness routines for women, learned that it was High Intensity Interval Training, better known as HIIT training... I should have known as I've used HIIT training in the past and that was how I got into the most lean state ever. There are many reasons why HIIT training works best for women and many routines out there for you to try to/or use. I personally like and recommend the Turbo Fire's workouts, for those of you aren't into creating your own workouts. Otherwise, if you want to create and use your own timing systems (which you can get fun free apps, like HIIT Interval Training Timer for your phone) this app might interest you.

I originally had the link in for Jillian Michaels' Shape magazine workout, then took it out, but I will put that back in again. Why did I take it out? Jillian comes with controversy and her aggressive train style on BL irritates me. Why am I putting it in then, because I like these moves and they may be more appealing to my lady readers, plus the robin's egg blue workout pants are adorable with those sneakers. (yeah, I'm easy like that)

Jillian Michaels' Fast Track to Fit Workout

A snippet from the Shape piece: "

The Plan: The gym is packed, and you’re sporting a shiny new pair of sneakers. It must be January! But 2013 will be different: You will get trim and toned for good. All you need is a plan that’s super-effective but doesn’t suck up a lot of your time—and this is it. Based on Jillian Michaels BODYSHRED (a new program at Crunch gyms nationwide), this 30-minute routine includes strength moves to sculpt sexy muscle, core challengers to whittle your middle, and heart-rate-revving plyometrics to blast calories. Team it with a healthy diet and Jillian’s motivational tips, and your resolution will become a reality before the gym crowd thins out.

How it works: Five times a week, warm up for 3 minutes by jogging in place or jumping rope. Then, do circuits 1 and 2 twice. Cool down with 3 minutes of low-intensity moves like arm circles, toe taps, and walking lunges."

Don't forget those great HIIT Training phone apps, they really come in handy for timing your own workouts..

Here it is another snippet, geared more toward men and seen recently in bodybuilding.com, I've spent a lot of time reading what Keifer has to say, so have a lot of my friends, give it a try to see how you do..

HIIT Can Get You Huge, Especially If You Are A Meathead In Need Of Cardio

This is via the Bodybuilding.com Site:

"You don't want conventional wisdom. You want to show convention your middle finger and start doing things the right way—and this applies to everything, across the board.

Take fat loss, for example. When you want to reach ridiculously low levels of body fat, what's the first thing conventional wisdom tells you to do? More cardio. The idea, then, is to put in hours and hours of work on the treadmill, elliptical and bike, right? That, conventional wisdom says, is how you'll get the fat off.

As usual, however, science tells us something different. Numerous studies have shown that this sort of steady-state cardio isn't even effective for burning fat. It also tells us something most of us don't know: that there's a big-time downside to doing hours of cardio, and several things to think about the next time you reserve an hour-long block of your time to step on a treadmill." Click here to continue reading on Bodybuilding.com

I've been reading and doing a rather intensive study on nutrition and test trialing a new training and nutrition system, which I will write more about once I smooth out the details. The way I've been eating is geared towards taking advantage of my body's catabolic hormones, not only are they responsible for breaking down muscle tissue (which can only happen in certain scenarios), but also burning bodyfat as well. What I have been studying, for over 3 months, is how to time eating during the day, also with training, to still eat all the fun foods, but have these party foods fuel your muscle growth when you are in an anabolic stage.. Until then, have fun and keep it clean...

What better way to remember this oddly iconic date than to take twelve photos of your day..

Then posting the your photos for all the Looky loos to see.

So, you ask, what is the Twelve of Twelve Project (click this link for further information) It was a creation of Chad Darnell, who is <del datetime="2012-12-12T03:47:48+00:00">checking</del> nursing a potentially broken foot as we speak..

Who is Chad Darnell..? This handsome devil that's who, he is a very talented writer who knows all the cool people, I'm not kidding you about the cool people, and the talented part..

Please play along,

It's easy, just take twelve photos doing fun, silly and/or bizarro things, post them into a folder online so that you can share here. Lets see what your 12th day of the 12 month in the year 2012 entailed...
