As kids, our mother made BBQ spare ribs using a homemade BBQ, this was always such a treat. One family member, who will remain nameless, would have a virtual graveyard of rib bones around their plate after this meal. Oddly enough, I had always associated this sauce with pork, lately however, we’ve used it often with chicken and beef in the Instant Pot and loved it just as much. Our newest apple cider BBQ sauce recipe Instant Pot country style ribs, so good my MIL had to get her own Instant Pot!

This basic BBQ sauce was used to make the best pulled pork ever.

Homemade Barbecue Sauce

Use this BBQ sauce recipe as a base, then mix and max your own favorites to make this your own.

  • 1/2 cup catsup
  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 small 1 small onion chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-1/2 tsp brown sugar
  • 1-1/2 tsp prepared mustard
  • 1-1/2 tsp worchestershire sauce
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp pepper
  1. Whisk together vinegar, brown sugar, mustard, tomato catsup, and worchestershire sauce.

  2. Cook onion in frying pan until translucent and carmelized just a bit. Add garlic and water while quickly de-decarmalizing the pan. (nudge the brown bits off) Add the vinegar mix and blend. Salt and pepper to taste.

  3. Finish this sauce by either leaving as is, or puree it to desired consistency.

This recipe can be adapted in so many ways by adjusting the;

  • catsup to tomato paste
  • vinegar to apple cider vinegar
  • Brown sugar to maple or monk
  • adding herbs and spices to personalized it.

DIY Barbecue Sauce

Measuring ingredients with a digital scale makes recipes an easy task. Most scales give measurements in KG, lbs, grams, and ounces. I use a conversion app to change measures to meet my needs.

We vary the tomato catsup with salsa or paste, the prepared mustard with Dijon or dry powdered, the vinegar with flavored varieties, and the brown sugar with maple syrup. You can also caramelize the onions then cook this DIY Barbecue sauce to reduce and bring the flavors together.

There are so many things you can do with this recipe and it is great to have when needed in a pinch.
