Kindle Fire: My first e-reader

Kindle Fire: My first E Reader

Stop the presses, I mean literally, I have finally moved away from print copy into the realm of E-reader/tablet. Well, in truth I have been reading on my laptop for sometime now but this isn’t very convenient, think laptops and treadmills; yikes!!  (Amazon has reader apps depending on your platform.) We spent the weekend messing around with a friends IPad2, that was a lot of fun and started the “I want a reader” wheels spinning.

On the way home my husband and I started talking about the various options with the readers and of course the cost for each. Cost and what we would be using the product for were the major points of discussion. My husband would need something with video capability and a larger screen for his job while I only need to read and play games. Most of my computer time is spent with programs that wouldn’t work on a tablet.

There is a lot of positive reviews with the IPad2, the app availability and syncing of our ITunes library is a key feature. I also did a lot of reading on the Kindle Fire. One hilariously funny article was from The Android Police “Amazon’s Kindle Fire just made every Android tablet manufacturer look bad” is worth the read, not only for a few chuckles but has a lot of pertinent information. Discovery News also has a nicely written piece on the Kindle Fire titled: “New Amazon Kindle Fires Up E-Reader Fans”

  • So what was the verdict?
  • Who won the tablet battle?

That answer depends on who you ask:

For me and what my needs are at the moment it would be the Kindle Fire.  All I really see myself doing with a tablet is using it as a reader and means to improve note taking while reading technical manuals. Oh and games of course, social media connectivity and did I mention games..

For my husband it was the Ipad2: He can see the various benefits this unit has when it comes to his job and doing visual presentations.

So what’s next after deciding on the which tablet? Well then it is the accessories and how you can personalize your tablet to make it more your own. Things we considered when looking at sleeves was how protective they are, how stylish looking and the add on features of the sleeve.
(Incidentally, we went into our first Apple store on October 5th to purchase our IPad only to turn it on and learn Steve Jobs had passed away.)
Now, of course, I need to determine what sleeve or cover to use with this, I want something protective yet stylish with a bit of unique tossed in.

  • What do you think, what reader do you have and what are your reasons for getting one?
  • Where do you shop for covers and accessories for your Kindle or Ipad2?

I know I can’t wait for the release of the Kindle Fire to see how it compares to the IPad2.

  1. Hey there Janet;

For years I was a hold out for print copy too. I just could not imagine reading a book on something other than paper! But after jumping into the iPad 2 pool I have found myself reading some books on the Kindle app for the iPad. I do like the portability and it’s nice to have a number of books at my fingertips instead of carting around 3 or 4 full books and then deciding what to read.

Of course I’ve discovered a lot of other fun aspects of the iPad as well! It’s great for doing quick blog work – There’s a great WP app – and when it comes to church – having pretty much every version of the Bible at my fingertips with the YouVersion app is simply amazing!

If I were you, I’d hold out for the iPad 2 instead of going just for the Kindle. Believe me when I say this – You will see your hubby playing with his iPad and you will soon find your Kindle gathering dust as you go after the iPad.

    Great post!

    1. Listen I hear you about the IPad2 as we bought one last week, lucky hubby is willing to share, he is so good to me. I want the Kindle as well for the smaller portability and to compare products as well. I like reading on the IPad not only so that you can have more than one book but also for making notes, looking up terms and characters as well.

I have been looking at various aspects of the IPad and looking for Apps to fit my needs, that is the hardest part. With so many apps to chose from it is hard finding the right one for the need that I have at the moment.

We have had the IPad in the house for almost a week now, it is a lot of fun to play with but it isn’t something I would seek out. I like computing and working with my design programs too much to spend a lot of time on tablets othan than reading and the occasional game. I have recently scored a tablet computer by Motion Computing and I, personally, think that will be the best of all my worlds. It is a IPad sized computer which will be loaded with my favorite programs.
